Well folks, it's been awhile and I'm sorry that I haven't been able to update this before now, but the issue that we had with VanPac was not completely wrapped up until the end of November and then we all know what December is like in Canada!
The 'wrap up' with VanPac consisted of their agreeing to pay us 50,000 yen (approx $600 Cdn) for the 1/3 empty space in our 20' container (which they had told us was completely full). Because they sub-contracted the pickup of our stuff (three different trucks), there was no way we could know exactly how many cubic feet we had used up and when they told us it was full, we had to scramble to give away or throw away valuable stuff--which was worth at least $2000. On top of that, they didn't pack our furniture very carefully (including antique furniture which they assured us would be moved very carefully) and because there was empty space in the container, things got damaged because of all the jostling around. The furniture repairman quoted us $950 for repairing all the scratches, stains, and chips in our furniture. Fortunately, the insurance company paid in full, but considering we paid approximately $15,000.00 Cdn to move our container door-to-door, my position is that it never should have been damaged in the first place!
All in all, if I had to do it all over again, I guess I'd start living like a Spartan five years before my move so that I had nothing that needed to be shipped. If I had something that I absolutely could not part with, I would have it crated and moved by a company that specialized in moving sentimental or valuable items. This isn't a realistic way of looking at moving, however, most people are going to need a shipper/mover upon whom they can rely. We moved our stuff in storage from Calgary with Halifax Transfer and I would mostly recommend them. They lost a stool that my husband used for playing his upright bass due to the way it was described on the waybill, but the truck driver paid us for it out of his own pocket rather than having to register the oversight with his company.
On the lighter side, I'm happy that we can now call this move and all its associated issues finished. We love our new home and are looking forward to the new year and our new lives. I think it was time for us to come back to Canada and even though this is not without its challenges, it is nice to be back home. I will always have a big place in my heart for Japan and all the lovely people I met there, but this is where we belong. Hope you all are feeling the same sense of home. Happiness, peace, and prosperity to you all in 2013!

SHIPPING AND PAYMENT DETAILS
Please contact me at: ocean_paige@yahoo.ca if you are interested in an item. If you do not hear back from me within 24 hours, that probably means my reply went into your spam folder, so please look there for my reply.
If you don't want my emails to go into your spam folder, please add my email address to your list of contacts. Another way to communicate with me is to add a comment to the item you are interested in. I'll check comments to my blog everyday and respond within 24 hours.
Payment for items that are for sale must be made and confirmed before shipment with amounts deposited to our postal savings, paid by Amazon gift certificate, or via Paypal.
Thanks to John for the following hint regarding the process of signing up to Paypal: Paypal was easy once I got it set up in English. The hardest part was finding Paypal's telephone number. As soon as I logged in in English, it switched to Japanese. I telephoned 03-6739-7360. The girl who answered spoke perfect English. She told me my default language was Japanese, which it probably is for everyone with a Japanese address. In less then a minute she set my default language to English and then it was easy.

Van Pac being very slow in resolving issue with shipment
Just a quick update: people at Van Pac are being very slow in resolving our complaints. I would have to say at this point that if we were to move from Japan again, we probably wouldn't use them. Allied seemed good during our first steps of looking at different shippers, so they might be a good alternative if anyone reading this is planning to move from Japan with a household. I'll keep updating this to detail the response of Van Pac. Who knows? They might come through and prove themselves to be honest, competent movers...on the other hand...maybe not! We'll see.

Van Pac trouble
Hi folks,
Thought we had found a good shipper in Van Pac, but we had some problems and are now in the process of trying to sort them out. So far, not much luck in doing so. If you want the details, please email me and I'll give you the full story, but for now I'd just like to say to be careful in choosing your shipper and good luck with your move. I'll post details later when (and I suppose 'if') the aforementioned problems have been resolved.
Best always,
Paige

Notes from our move from Japan back to Canada
Now that we are unpacked and living in our new abode in Canada, we are finding that there are many things we wished we hadn't left behind. I'm not talking about all the souvenirs and clothes that we sold, gave away, or threw out, but the day-to-day items that we thought wouldn't be necessary for us to bring here. Turns out, everything we used in Japan, we need here and since we had shipped a container (based on volume, not weight), we would have saved ourselves money if we had brought it all.
Some of this regret is our own mistake. Little fiddly things like lamps, cleaning supplies, kitchen gadgets, etc. were felt to be 'clutter' and and since we wanted to de-clutter our lives anyway, decided to leave them behind. However, a lot of bigger or bulkier stuff was left because our shipper said it wouldn't fit in our container, which was absolutely their miscalculation--we had about 10 cubic meters of free space in our container when it arrived at our door in Canada!
My advice (and I know you're wondering!), is to make sure your shipper is loading the actual container at your door in Japan, or that you see the container before it is sealed at least. Our mover couldn't bring the actual container to the door since our neighbourhood streets were too narrow and, instead, did two separate pick ups on two different days with a total of three trucks! I don't think there was good communication between the office staff (with whom we did most of our communication) and their warehouse so the woman I spoke with told me our container would only have 1 or 2 cubic meters free and that we should leave this for packing material.
If you're organizing a move from Japan, I hope this helps you avoid some of things we regret. :)

moving house and taking your computer
I didn't think that packing our computers up and shipping them trans-Pacific was necessarily a good idea (at least that's what most of the 'experts' cautioned in my search results via the Internet), yet my desktop is running perfectly. I think that we saved our original boxes helped with the packing. It wasn't easy getting all the components back in their boxes--the fit of my tower was especially snug--but it was worth the time and frustration. After we had them in their dedicated boxes, we put them in bigger boxes with LOTS (and I mean LOTS) of padding. We bubble-wrapped the entire interior of the bigger box and then padded it with clothing and more bubble wrap. Then to be extra safe, we put those little white popcorn type packing thingies in all the loose space. We're pretty much finished all our unpacking and all the stuff we packed ourselves has nary a scratch whereas the stuff packed by the movers didn't fare so well. I don't think they were especially careful and we didn't have any special instructions on the bigger boxes housing our computer components (or any of our other electronic equipment), so I really do think it was our packing that saved the day. My advice, (if you want it)? Don't give away or dispose of your computer when you move. With some extra work and attention to detail, you CAN move your computer safely.

falling off the radar?
Hi there,
This is a message to a couple people who have been in touch with me ONCE about items that they wanted from my blog. I'm not sure if you got my reply/replies because I have heard nothing back from you since I replied to your one inquiry in which you stated you wanted the item and would pay the delivery. I do not want to ship the item(s) you were interested in without another confirmation from you that you want to pay the COD charge that I estimated and emailed to you. Even though the delivery charge will be paid by you and if you decline the package we will be here to be charged double by the delivery company, I do not want to leave the delivery company on the hook for the expense.
Please check your spam folder if you think I have not replied to you--this is where most of the communication break downs occur--and add my email address to your contacts so we can maintain good communication. We only have a couple more days in our home and I need an answer by tonight as to what to ship out and what to throw out.
Best,
Paige

remaining books all donated: BOOKS ARE ALL FREE!
The list I have posted is not up to date. Email if you're interested in a title or titles and I'll check to see if we still have it.
Free to pick up, so you're welcome to come out and browse. I won't be able to deliver any from the the post office--sorry, just TOO busy with move--but if you want more than five or so, I'm sure the takkyubin (COD delivery charge) will be less than what the books would typically cost you second hand.

Now the big job of organizing all our stuff for give away/sale
Just realized there's loads more organizing to do: I want to get everything laid out so people can come here and look through our stuff easily. We live in a neighbourhood that gets constant foot traffic (especially during holidays), so I'm thinking of putting stuff on a table where they can just take it and (if they want) leave a donation. I've seen people do this in this neighbourhood and others. It's amazing that you can do still do that in some places of the world (not our home country unfortunately!). Anyway! If you live in the Kansai area and you want to come out to have a browse through the items we have left, please email me at: ocean_paige@yahoo.ca
Cheers!

Shippers have done their job!
Wow! First time we ever used movers and I'm impressed. Those guys can really move fast and carry A LOT!
Most of our stuff we had planned to send to Canada managed to fit inside the container. The sofa bed didn't unfortunately, so we're still looking for a buyer for that. Also have that wonderful refrigerator that's been up on my blog for ages. Can't believe no one wants it. Make me an offer!
Other big items that we decided not to take:
--weights (make me an offer): pairs of rubberized weights (10kg, 15kg, 20kg), barbell, and bench. The bench is nothing to brag about but it does the job.
--wicker 6-drawer set (free for pick up).
If you're interested, email me and I'll get photos up on the blog ASAP.

If you are willing to take them COD takkyubin or COD yamato bin, divide by three and then divide that amount by two. Even BIGGER discounts for people who will pick up from our house and BIGGEST for people who will take large numbers of books.
