Thanks to John for the following hint regarding the process of signing up to Paypal: Paypal was easy once I got it set up in English. The hardest part was finding Paypal's telephone number. As soon as I logged in in English, it switched to Japanese. I telephoned 03-6739-7360. The girl who answered spoke perfect English. She told me my default language was Japanese, which it probably is for everyone with a Japanese address. In less then a minute she set my default language to English and then it was easy.
Japanese air conditioner/heater units spotted in Canada!
We left our wonderfully energy efficient air con/heater units in Japan because we thought we wouldn't be able to use them in Canada, yet I am spotting them at different businesses around town. I wonder if they have a different voltage/amp than the ones we had in Japan and, if not, if we would have been able to bring them over and use them here. This might be something worth looking into for other people making the move. Ours were five years old and had many more years life in them, but we couldn't sell them (not even to a 'recycle shop' really as they were only going to give us approx $50 for the lot--original price about $8000 depending on what day you do the exchange). Luckily, some friends were able to remove them and set them up in their homes. I've seen ac/heater units two years old on sayonara sales that seemed to have not sold also, so this is rather a shame. Anyway, this page is just to let you know that these type of units are becoming popular in Canada and that you MAY be able to use them in your home country if the electrical system is a match, so please check into that before you purchase them in the first place or before you chuck them. Now I must sign off and figure out which is the best way to heat a 70+ year old home in Canada!
