Thanks to John for the following hint regarding the process of signing up to Paypal: Paypal was easy once I got it set up in English. The hardest part was finding Paypal's telephone number. As soon as I logged in in English, it switched to Japanese. I telephoned 03-6739-7360. The girl who answered spoke perfect English. She told me my default language was Japanese, which it probably is for everyone with a Japanese address. In less then a minute she set my default language to English and then it was easy.

Shippers have done their job!

Wow! First time we ever used movers and I'm impressed. Those guys can really move fast and carry A LOT!

Most of our stuff we had planned to send to Canada managed to fit inside the container. The sofa bed didn't unfortunately, so we're still looking for a buyer for that. Also have that wonderful refrigerator that's been up on my blog for ages. Can't believe no one wants it. Make me an offer!

Other big items that we decided not to take:

--weights (make me an offer): pairs of rubberized weights (10kg, 15kg, 20kg), barbell, and bench. The bench is nothing to brag about but it does the job.
--wicker 6-drawer set (free for pick up).

Sending Money

Bank or Postal Transfer (furikomi, 振込)

Cost: service charges (from 100 yen to about 500 yen)
Advantage: Safe, easy, relatively cheap if done through post office, very cheap if done online through the post office
Disadvantage: Bank service charges can be expensive. Buyer has to make a trip to a bank or post office.
Method: Buyer transfers the money to an account given by the seller. Transfers to postal accounts incur lower service charges.

NOTE: Yuucho Direct (ゆうちょダイレクト) is an online banking service offered through the post office. You can use this service to transfer money from one postal account (in Japan) to another (also in Japan) online.

Book Certificates (toshoken, 図書券)

Cost: free
Advantage: Free. Can usually use your credit card.
Disadvantage: Not everyone wants book certificates.
Method: Buyer purchases book certificates (either in the form of actual certificates or a prepaid card) at a bookstore and sends them to the seller.

Gift Certificates (shouhinken, 商品券)

Cost: usually free
Advantage: Free. Can be sent from home, so buyer can send money immediately. Can use your credit card.
Disadvantage: Not everyone wants gift certificates.
Method: Buyer purchases online gift certificates for a company of the seller’s choice (e.g. Amazon.co.jp). Since sending money by furikomi or in the post ends up costing the buyer more money, this can be a good option for buyers to put the purchase on their credit card through a trusted online company. Through Amazon, you can buy gift certificates in amounts from 500 yen to 500,000 yen.

Money Orders (yuubin kawase, 郵便為替)

Cost: from around 10 yen to around 100 yen
Advantage: Cheap.
Disadvantage: Buyer has to make a trip to the post office. Seller also has to make a (second) trip to the post office to cash it.
Method: Buyer purchases postal orders at the post office. They come in fixed amounts (500yen, 1000yen) known as “teigaku kogawase” or in an amount that you specify, “kawase”. The fee for the set amount postal orders is only about 10 yen, the fee for the second type is about 100 yen. It may work out slightly cheaper to send 1 fixed amount postal order, and the rest of the sum in stamps when you are paying someone for an item. The seller fills in his or her name and address in the space on the front and stamps it with an inkan (or possibly signature) to cash it at the post office.

Paypal

Cost: service charge
Advantage: Can be sent from home, so buyer can send money immediately. Can use your credit card.
Disadvantage: Not everyone has a paypal account.
Method: See: www.paypal.com

Registered Cash Envelope (genkin kakitome, 現金書留)

Cost: 20 yen for envelope, 500 yen to send
Advantage: Safe way to send money when the seller doesn’t have a postal account.
Disadvantage: Too expensive for low priced items. Buyer has to make a trip to the post office.
Method: Buyer puts the money in a special envelope provided by the post office (genkin fuutou, 20 yen), seals it up, and signs the flap in three places. Seller will sign to receive the envelope, so buyer will have proof that the money was received.

Stamps (kitte, 切手)

Cost: postage
Advantage: Good when sending small amounts.
Disadvantage: Some sellers have no use for stamps. Buyer has to make a trip to the post office.
Method: Buyer sends the agreed amount in stamps.

IMPORTANT!!

NOTE about getting information on postal options: Call the Postal Services Information in English hotline (0570-046111). Open 8am to 10pm weekdays, 9am to 7pm Saturday, Sunday and holidays. You will be charged 8.5 yen for every 180 seconds of the call. If you need assistance in English while at the post office, just have the postal clerk call this number while you’re there and you won’t have to pay the call fee.

NOTE regarding sending things by COD: Sellers should check the cost of sending the item by COD (chakubarai) before sending it that way. For small items, this could quadruple the price.

NOTE regarding sending cash in the mail: The proper way of sending cash in the mail in Japan is through registered mail, no matter how little the amount. It is illegal to send cash/coins in the mail any other way. Members of Tell and Sell Japan have reported actually being FINED by the post office for sending cash through the regular mail. Also, if the cash goes missing, you have no way of proving that you sent it. We recommend either using registered mail or getting a post office account and sending money to the seller’s post office account. Both are easy to do and you will have proof of payment.

Some useful info provided to me by John (thanks John!)

Kuroneko may have express and slower deliveries. Kuroneko goes up to 25kg on the standard service (express). Above that they go on a weight service. Sagawa might be better.
